Back in January the Oxford-based indie label Big Scary Monsters opened a pop up shop in Hackney Downs for a couple of weeks. As if that wasn't cool enough they also hosted live acoustic sessions by Beach Slang, Modern Baseball, Kevin Devine, Tall Ships and Delta Sleep - and I made it to the closing day event featuring an exclusive acoustic performance by Gnarwolves.
Thom/Gnarwolves played to a packed, steamingly hot room full of indie/alternative/hardcore/punk lovers and managed to pull off the set with a guitar that kept insisting on going out of tune mid song. While barely audible to the untrained ear (such as mine) he hilariously mentioned that this situation is actually his nightmare. We all had a good laugh about it and hopefully he wasn't too frustrated. I thought he sounded bloody great.
Especially with there being no background or white noise, no amps, no mics, just raw acoustic sound and vocals, which must be not only terrifying but really difficult to adjust to after playing years of distorted, melodic punk in gritty clubs.
As well as playing his own solo stuff he'd put out on George in 2015 Thom also played a cover of The Get Up Kids' 'Holiday'.
A joy to watch and a rare one at that.
