You know you're at a Sports Team show when Let Me Entertain You blasts as the band walks on, the stage is decorated with flowers and lights and the lead singer is wearing a matador outfit... London's latest rock sensation delivered a triumphant set at The Electric Ballroom, their biggest headline show to date.
The joy of experiencing Sports Team live is short but sweet. Frontman Alex Rice slips into his on-stage persona/ borderline alter ego, putting on his signature spazzy dance moves in front of an adoring crowd. Meanwhile the band around guitarist and songwriter Robb Knaggs keeps it nonchalant, up until the point the band begins the show closer Stanton, when balloons start bouncing off the ceiling and drummer Al Greenwood dives into the crowd and anarchy ensues. Balloons all over, security struggling to keep track of the band that disappears into the crowd, support bands and crews on stage while the drumming gets faster and more and more manic, fans, photographers and musicians all mashed up into a giant English fun fare.
My interview with this absolute sensation of a band will be up soon. Until then, catch Sports Team on tour or at a festival this summer. They'll be playing main stage exclusively in no time... (No seriously, they are well on the way.)
